Comparing Mini Split Heat Pumps & Traditional A/C Systems

If you’re upgrading your home’s cooling system, you’ve probably come across two main options: traditional central air conditioning systems and mini split heat pumps. Both can keep your home comfortable during a Minnesota summer, but they work in very different ways—and which one is right for you depends on your space, your budget, and your goals.

Before you decide, talk to the experts at H&S Heating and Air Conditioning about what system is right for your home, or check out this blog for things to consider. Contact us today if you have any questions or want to discuss air conditioning service, repair, or replacement!

What Is a Traditional A/C System?

A traditional air conditioning system uses ductwork to cool your entire home. It includes:

  • An outdoor condenser unit
  • An indoor evaporator coil
  • A furnace or air handler
  • Ductwork that distributes cooled air

These systems are common in homes that already have ductwork in place.

Best for: Whole-home cooling with consistent temperatures from room to room

What Is a Mini Split Heat Pump?

Mini split systems, also known as ductless heat pumps, consist of:

  • One or more indoor wall-mounted units (heads)
  • A small outdoor condenser
  • A refrigerant line connecting them

They don’t use ductwork, which makes them ideal for additions, older homes, or rooms that are hard to keep cool.

Bonus: Mini splits provide both cooling and heating, making them useful year-round.

Efficiency and Energy Use

Mini split systems are highly energy-efficient, especially in smaller spaces or homes without ducts. Because they deliver air directly to each zone, they lose less energy than ducted systems.

Traditional A/C systems can also be efficient, especially newer models, but they rely on ducts, which can lose up to 30% of energy if they are leaking or poorly insulated.

Installation

Mini Split Installation

Faster installation with no ductwork needed. Great for homes with additions, sunrooms, or spaces without existing HVAC.

Traditional A/C Installation

Requires ductwork. Installation takes longer and is more invasive if ducting isn’t already in place.

Cost

Mini splits can have a higher upfront cost per unit, especially if you’re installing several zones. However, they can save money in the long run through energy efficiency and zoned control.

Traditional A/C systems are more cost-effective for cooling an entire home, especially if you already have ducts.

Which System is Right for You?

Choose a mini split if you want targeted heating and cooling, no ductwork, and high efficiency.

Choose a traditional A/C system if you want whole-home cooling and already have ductwork in place.
